Biomolecular & Biomechanical Interactions REU (NSF)
The REU site in “Biomolecular and Biomechanical Interactions” is hosted by the Biomedical Engineering program at the University of South Carolina (USC). This program leverages the expertise of the USC Biomedical Engineering faculty in areas of protein science, tissue and cellular engineering, nanotechnology, and computational modeling to advance the understanding of biomolecular and biomechanical interactions that contribute to fundamental biological phenomena. Research projects will utilize tools and knowledge at the interface of engineering and medicine to gain insight into interactions among biological molecules and tissues as well as interactions between synthetic or artificial systems and biological structures. An understanding of such fundamental biological phenomena will provide the foundation for future strategies that will increase the length and quality of life through preventative healthcare, early diagnostics, and therapeutics.
The “Biomolecular and Biomechanical Interactions” REU provides a summer research experience for 10 participants. Participants are recruited nationally from US universities and selected based upon their previous academic performance, potential and enthusiasm for conducting research, and future plans for a career in research. In addition to research, participants will engage in weekly educational activities, which will span both medicine and engineering and provide participants with knowledge and skills in Biomedical Engineering research to enrich their learning experience. Planned social activities will build a sense of community among mentors and participants. The summer will conclude with a symposium, during which participants will present their research findings in both a poster and an oral presentation. The presentation materials are designed such that participants will leave the program with the materials necessary to present their research at a national meeting.
